Who Needs a Self-Assessment Tax Return?

HMRC requires a tax return if you fall into any of these categories for the tax year:

Self-Employed & Sole Traders

If you earned more than £1,000 gross from self-employment, freelancing, or contract work during the tax year.

Residential Landlords

If you rent out property, holiday lets, or rooms and earned rental income after allowable expenses.

High Earners (£100k+)

The £12,570 Personal Allowance begins tapering above £100,000 (reduced by £1 for every £2 earned). While income alone is no longer an automatic reason to file, you may still need a return if you have untaxed income, higher-rate pension relief to claim, or other qualifying factors. Check HMRC’s current filing criteria or consult us.

Side Hustles & Online Sellers

Earning extra income from eBay, Vinted, Etsy, Airbnb, delivery driving, or consulting above the £1,000 trading allowance.

Company Directors

Directors taking dividends and salary from limited companies who need to reconcile their personal tax liability.

Child Benefit & Capital Gains

If you or your partner had adjusted net income over £60,000 while claiming Child Benefit (repayable via PAYE where eligible or through Self Assessment under current HMRC thresholds), or sold shares, crypto, or property subject to CGT.

Common Expenses We Make Sure You Claim

Many self-employed people overpay HMRC by hundreds of pounds simply because they don't know what they're allowed to claim. We ensure you claim every single penny:

Working From Home

Flat-rate home office allowance or proportion of electricity, gas, internet, and council tax.

Travel & Mileage

45p per business mile (first 10,000 miles) or actual fuel, public transport, parking, and train fares.

Equipment & Tech

Laptops, monitors, mobile phones, tools, software subscriptions, and office stationery.

Professional Fees

Accountancy fees (our fee is tax deductible!), professional insurance, and trade memberships.

⚠️ Don't Miss the 31st January HMRC Deadline

Missing the self-assessment deadline triggers an immediate automatic £100 penalty from HMRC, even if you owe zero tax. Additional penalties of £10/day apply after 3 months, plus interest on any unpaid balance. Let us file your return well ahead of time so you never pay unnecessary penalties.
